About Us

Your Hosts – Julia & Phillip Robertson

Julia & Philip Robertson

We moved to Te Anau from Blenheim in the north of the South Island (in the Marlborough wine growing region) in 2003. Phillip was at that time a Police Officer and his love of the mountains, tramping (hiking) and kayaking made him long to retire here and when a policing job came up in Fiordland, he enthusiastically applied.

At that time, he became involved with the St John Ambulance Service as a volunteer and gained his EMT qualification over the next 5 years. In 2010, after 34 years of policing, he was offered a paid position as a Paramedic with St John and he is now studying towards his ILS (Upskilled Paramedic) qualification and is really enjoying the challenge and change of profession. Because of the mountainous terrain and distance to the nearest base hospital, the ambulance service here heavily rely on the services of the rescue helicopter and he is one of the team here that are specially trained in helicopter ambulance work and is experienced in winching patients into the helicopter. They cover the whole of the Southern Region, including Fiordland, sometimes as far up as Mt Aspiring National Park in Central Otago, and right down into the Southern Ocean where they sometimes rescue people off fishing boats and cruise ships, and of course Stewart Island and the sub-Antarctic Islands. During his tenure in the Police Force, he spent 20 years involved in Search & Rescue, which gave him a lot of skills and experience that cross over into his ambulance work, which has been very useful on occasions, especially when dealing with difficult patients.

His other interests include hiking, motorcycles, DIY, photography and he has recently renewed his interest in painting. He is passionate about Fiordland and loves talking to guests about his work and the unique environment we live in.

Julia is originally from Auckland and is an ex Medical Secretary. She has travelled extensively throughout the UK and Europe as well as Australia, short trips to the USA, Singapore and the Pacific Islands. She now runs the B&B full time and is passionate about food & wine, and relaxes by cooking, drawing, walking and gardening. She has a Diploma in Wine which she gained while President of the Redwood Wine Club in Marlborough. She is knowledgeable about the Fiordland area and all the activities available and is happy to advise and book any of the many local tours on your behalf.

We have two very friendly Birman cats, Meg and Fleur, who you may see wandering around the garden.
